Earning more, but are you getting ahead?
You can be earning more than you ever have and still not know if you're actually getting ahead.
I think this becomes particularly important in our 40s and 50s.
We might have a good income, a nice home, investments and a healthy super balance.
On paper, everything looks pretty good.
But ask a different question — what is all this actually moving us towards? — and the answer isn't always clear.
Maybe it's retiring at 60. Helping the kids. Travelling more. Paying off the mortgage. Or simply having more freedom to make different choices later in life.
A high income makes those things easier. But it doesn't automatically mean we're on track to achieve them.
There's a difference between accumulating wealth and making financial progress.
Progress needs a destination.
Once we know what we're trying to make possible, we can ask a much better question:
Is what we're doing today actually getting us there?
That's where I think having a clear financial roadmap can be valuable. Not because the goal is always to accumulate as much as possible, but because it helps us understand what needs to happen from here.
Sometimes that means doing more.
Sometimes it means discovering we're already doing enough and can afford to enjoy more of what we've built.
The point isn't always to have more.
It's knowing whether what we have is taking us where we want to go.
