You might have seen the recent headlines about the collapse of an investment scheme tied to people’s super.

It’s heartbreaking — thousands of Australians have lost some, or all, of their retirement savings.

Whenever I see stories like this, I’m reminded of the conversations I have with clients.

The promise of “better performance” can be tempting. But behind the scenes, some investments — especially those that are complex, illiquid, or poorly managed — carry hidden risks that don’t surface until it’s too late.

Here’s the simple rule of thumb I use:

If you can’t clearly explain:

  • What you own

  • How it makes money

  • The risks involved

…you’re not investing — you’re trusting blindly.

Yes, returns matter.

But understanding and transparency matter more.

That’s how you protect what you’ve worked so hard to build.
