An unexpected lesson from my travels
I’ve been travelling with my family over the past few weeks, and somewhere along the way I noticed something about myself.
I realised I was treating every decision like an exam question—as if there was one correct answer.
Which places should we visit? Which route should we take? Which hotel should we stay in?
I kept wanting to make the best decision.
But after nearly three weeks of travelling, I realised something.
Had we made different choices, we probably would have created different memories—not necessarily better ones.
It made me think that life is often the same.
We spend so much time trying to find the perfect decision that we forget what matters most happens after the decision.
The effort we put into it.
The attitude we bring to it.
The way we embrace it.
Some decisions aren’t proven to be right. They’re made right by how we live them.
It reminded me that this is true of financial decisions too. We can never know with certainty what would have happened had we chosen a different path. What we can do is make thoughtful decisions based on the information we have, then commit to them with patience and discipline.
It’s a perspective I’ll be bringing back with me—not just personally, but in the way I continue helping clients make financial decisions with confidence.
